Lift Truck Battery Safety
The huge industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts should be charged regularly and properly maintained. Safety measures should be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is important for employees working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG consist of goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect both skin and clothes from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be situated close to the charging area. The route to the post must not be blocked and an injured employee should be able to go to the eyewash station from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It must be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Never allow objects such as matches or lighters to be utilized while somebody is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is important to keep the battery charging area correctly ventilated. The recharging method could cause fumes to be released. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
